My Crochet Journey

Third time’s the charm

A small beginning in my crochet journey

2 min read

At the start of 2026, it was time for the New Year’s resolutions. I don’t know why, but slowly my TikTok feed changed to a total algorithm of crochet tutorials and inspiration videos. Again, the creativity urge peaked, but now I said to myself that the third time would be the charm and my resolution became to dive into getting good materials and learning the techniques.

After a bit of research, I found a beginner-friendly type of yarn: acrylic.
It’s affordable, comes in many colours, and because it has some stretch, it’s easier to unravel and fix mistakes. The brand I chose was Scheepjes Colour Crafter.

Then came the next question… which colours?

At least I knew from the tutorials on Tiktok that I wanted to practise with a granny square to learn the basics a bit and I saw some cute roses that I wanted to recreate as well. Furthermore, Google suggested to begin with bright colours to clearly see your stitches.

In the end, I chose red, green, light blue, light pink… and white.
Even though white had been my enemy so far, I figured I’d have to face it at some point.

With these colours I started with a standard granny square, I forgot which instruction video it was based on, and a small rose based on a Tiktok video: https://www.tiktok.com/@cr0chetpattern/video/7591741286713953567?_r=1&_t=ZG-930goQozElF
With slowing down the playback speed and rewatching a lot of times. I created these two projects:

During these projects, I started to get a better feel for the yarn.
And with the rose especially, I learned something important: unless stated otherwise, you usually crochet into both loops of a stitch—not just the front or the back loop. For my first rose, I only used one loop, which made it look a bit loose.

So I tried again. This time, using both loops… and the difference was immediately visible. The rose turned out much sturdier and more defined.

I think this was the moment something clicked for me. That learning really is in the doing.

Even when things don’t turn out the way you hoped, they’re not failures.
They’re just part of figuring out how to make it better next time.
